We often refer to our consumption of food in black and white terminology. In so much that we label certain foods/food types as being exclusive to a single macronutrient. These are just three examples of common foods which are often attributed to consumption of single macronutrients. - - Whilst each macronutrient contains different nutritional components, they all contain one nutritional parallel - calories. Therefore, by dissecting the macronutrient density per total calorie value, we can gather a true reflection of the actual macronutrient ratios of that food. - - As fat contains 9 calories per gram compared to 4 calories per gram respective of protein and fat, it is clear that volume of fat does not have to be as high in order for it to be as (or more) dense within that food. To use the perceptively ‘high protein’ 200g ribeye steak as an example: out of 508 calories, only 148 derive from protein, whilst the remaining 360 are fat. Therefore just 29% of the steak’s calories contain protein, whereas 71% of the steak’s calories are comprised of fat. If one was to denounce a ribeye steak as being high in protein, they would be advised to announce that it was also exceedingly high in fat. - - We like to label our consumption food as consumption of ‘protein’, ‘carbs’ or ‘fat’, but the truth is that most foods contain all three macronutrients. - - To understand macronutrients in relation to body composition is to understand that all macronutrients exist in caloric form. Some may increase likelihood of satiety, some may provide prolonged energy and some may be enjoyed more than others, all of which may support/hinder an individual’s adherence. But it is the overall energy balance which determines one’s composition, regardless of the macronutrients ratio split. - - For the purpose of informed empowerment, it’s probably a good idea to look beyond common the perceptions and of the foods we consume. Most people losing weight focus on macronutrients.⠀ -⠀ But what about the micronutrients?⠀ -⠀ Don't let the word "micro" fool you.⠀ -⠀ Micronutrients are what keep you feeling good and balanced. What’s something I’m SO guilty of when it comes to food shopping?? Buying things because there’s a sale (after I check the macros & see if they’re doable, which in reality you can enjoy anything in moderation 🤗) BUT I will buy foods on sale that have a long shelf life & then TOTALLY forget them in my freezer or pantry 😅 anyone else guilty of this?! . . So this week of eats is brought to you by me trying to enjoy those foods that have been waiting patiently to be eaten 😅 those foods are Chicken Breast I bought on sale & froze, frozen chicken poppers from  @realgoodfoods , frozen butternut squash spirals from  @greengiant , cheddar broccoli rice from  @knorr , and Canadian bacon 👌 . . And while I’m excited to clear out my freezer I knew I still needed to get to the store to get some fresh veggies, fruit, and healthy fats for the week because less processed means more nutrients & volume in food for fewer calories, this means I can have plate filling nutrient packed meals that keep me fueled, satisfied, & satiated 😋💪🙌 . . Here are the macros, micros and total calories from my ‘What I Ate Today’ post for those of you that wanted to know. Don’t pay attention to the numbers listed on the right. The numbers that matter are the ones on left. Also, I’m not sure exactly how accurate the micronutrients are, but this is just what MyFitnessPal is telling me!• • I normally do not eat this much fat in one day. I would say I average around 70 grams of fat per day. I aim for around 25% of my calories to come from healthy fats! Most plant-based doctors recommend that 15-20% of your calories should come from healthy fats, but I feel better when I eat slightly more than that! ✴️MACRONUTRIENTS✴️ ▫️ Our food contains both macronutrients and micronutrients. ▫️ Macro nutrients or macros are the nutrients we need in large amounts, because they are our building block (protein) and what provides us with energy (carbs & fat) from our food. ▫️ Macronutrients affect us in many different ways including: ▪️energy levels ▪️ metabolic function ▪️ immune system health ▪️ hormone production ▪️ body composition ... and so much more. ▫️ The three macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates (carbs) and fat. . Some common examples of each include: 🍖 PROTEIN - eggs, fish/seafood, animal/poultry meat, dairy (like Greek yogurt), beans/legumes, and protein powders (my favorite  @1stphorm’s Level-1 and Phormula-1) 🍞 CARBS - oatmeal, potatoes, rice, quinoa, pasta, bread, tortilla wraps, cereal, beans/legumes, fruit and starchy vegetables 🥑 FATS - oils, butter, nuts/nut butters, avocado, egg yolk, whole fat milk/cheese, coconut, and dark chocolate (70% cocoa and above) . The energy we get from these macronutrients is essentially their calorie count. So macro nutritients make up our calories. Get it? The best diet is the one that works for you! The one that you can commit to it, make it happen and most importantly, that is sustainable for you. So the diet you follow, should fit your lifestyle and respect your food preference. That’s why I’m not a big fan of cutting a whole macro group off your diet and I’d much rather find the right balance of macros that is realistic to my lifestyle. Did you know that, of all people trying to lose weight, 85% will succeed? BUT, of all 85% people that lost weight, 95% of them will gain the weight back 😳 So the best way to lose weight AND keep it off, is finding a diet that becomes your lifestyle. You still need to keep your social life, you need to find food that works for your plan when you are eating out, you have to be able to eat your treat to avoid cravings, but in order to lose weight, your caloric intake has to be lower than your energy burn. Monday Motivation!! Pictures and testimonials are proof! Read 👇🏻 Testimonial: Vickie I was hiding a LOT of fluff under my scrubs and loose fitting boutique clothes and comfy leggings. In June, I decided at my heaviest 134 pounds, that I had to change my diet and get off the couch. Mind you, 134 doesn’t sound bad to some people, but when I’m just 4’11 1/2” my core was definitely a busted pumpkin roll and not just little love handles. I have lost nearly 10” just from my core (waist, around my belly button and my ‘pooch’ below my belly button). Quick Update For You All! - Last week weight = 87.7 This week weight = 89.2 - Big jump this week and that'll mainly be through water, inflammation due to poor food choices which again will increase water retnetion and some possible fat gain but not much. The thing is it was my birthday and I am not going to hold back. I had some fun with my food, ate out majority of the week so I knew it was coming. SCRAMBLED TOFU ON TOAST W/ AVO & VEGIES • A few months ago I made the decision to make a big change in my diet by becoming a lacto-ovo-vegetarian meaning that I have no longer been consuming meat, chicken or fish, however still consume dairy and other products such as eggs, cheese and cows milk. I made this decision purely for health reasons as studies have shown this way of eating to have many health benefits including lower risk of cancers, stroke, etc. This decision is one I have made for myself and I am not enforcing this on anyone else as everyone can make their own decisions and this is something I just wanted to try! One question I have been asked quite frequently becoming a vegetarian is “where do you get your protein?”. There are many other sources of protein that don’t include animal products such as red meat. Vegetarian friendly sources of protein can include beans, eggs (particularly whites), tofu (such as this), lentils, nuts, green peas and many more! A meal such as this one shown above which I had at Fort Green Cafe shows a well balanced vegetarian meal which DOES include protein! Just remember, red meat isn’t the only source of high quality protein👍🏻😊

STEPS versus CARDIO Tracking steps is a vital component for staying on track. I prefer to track via steps rather than prescribing cardio sessions. Steps can be completed inside, outside, in the gym, at home, etc. and allow for different variable to take place within the day. Through the tracking of steps, you are able to track your NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis). As individuals progress in their journey, they tend to start slacking off at the 4-6 week mark. Initial progress is motivating, but then it begins to slow, and with that, motivation drops off as well. This is the point where it’s most important to stay on track. By creating and adhering to a step goal, this will ensure your daily activities (outside of exercise) continue to aid in your fat loss. 2000-3000 steps only takes roughly a 20 minute walk. This is easily done in a work lunch break or early in the morning, making up a big chunk of your daily steps. Make your steps a key part of your day to get done, as your NEAT plays a large role in overall calorie burn. Step goals can be built up gradually. Have a look at what you’re averaging each day, and then gradually increase this number each week.
