A laundry worker, known as a dhobi, washes clothes in the Yamuna River, India's most polluted river. Agra, India Laundry detergents introduce phosphates to the already polluted river. If there are any fish in the Yamuna in Agra (not likely), phosphates destroy mucus layers that protect fish from bacteria and parasites and protect fish eggs. The Yomiuri Shimbun Newspaper reported this week that Japan’s ju-hyo are threatened by bark beetles that are threatening alpine forests at the tree line throughout Japan, and in North America as well. Ju-hyo are created when supercooled water droplets from clouds forming over the Sea of Japan accumulate and freeze on Aomori-todomatsu (Marie’s fir/abies mariesii) trees. In the past, enough bark beetles’ eggs were killed by extremely cold winter temperatures. Now, with climate change, more survive eggs survive the winter and infest the forests, killing the trees. In the case in Japan, the warmer winter is allowing pest, for which the trees have little defense, to move up the mountain and weaken the trees, making them even more susceptible to the bark beetles.  #climatechange  #globalwarming  #blight  #jyuhyo  #snowmonster  #dieout  #Japan  #winter  #snow  #jameswhitlowdelano

Photo by  @jameswhitlowdelano for  @everydayclimatechange: Happy New Year 2019. Thank you for coming along with us again this year while ECC photographers document climate change and solutions around the planet. The traditional border between Tibet and China Proper, before Mao's invasion and conquest of Tibet, were the mighty Daxue Mountains (Great Snowy Mountains) of Sichuan that divided the Sichuan Basin from the Tibetan Plateau. The glacier fall of Hailuogou Glacier tumbles down the flanks of 7,556 m (24,790 ft) Minya Konka (Gongga Shan in Chinese). Sichuan, China. (Kham, Tibet) It is evident that the glacier recently filled this valley up to the "bathtub" ring of loose grey scree on the right of the frame. Soon the ice may not cover the entire fall because of thinning of the glacier due to global warming. According to a Laboratory of Cryospheric Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou, China and Nagoya University, Japan joint-research project, the glacier retreated 1.8 km (1.1 mi) during the 20th century. The glacier continues to thin in the ablation zone where the ice experiences net ice loss at lower elevations due to climate change. The thinning and retreat have accelerated since 1989. The glacier area has lost 0.8 square kilometers of surface area over the last 44 years, and critically, it has thinned by 1.1 meters/year in the lower, debris-covered ablation zone. The average retreat rate was 13 meters (42.7 ft) from 1966 - 1989 but increased to an average of 27 m (88.6 ft) from 1989 to 2008.  #climatechange  #globalwarming  #Tibet  #meltingice #ice  #glaciers  #meltingglaciers  #environment  #china  #jameswhitlowdelano  #hailuogou

Think about those less fortunate during this holiday season. Year in Pictures: The multi-generational poverty continues in Manila and is a familiar feature of the cityscape. A young pregnant woman with a young child in tow, is already missing teeth, all too common at her age, perhaps mid-20's to early-30's. She sleeps on the streets of Malate in Central Manila, which is not even a slum. It is this income category that is most likely to be targetted with extrajudicial killings due to drug use, to dull misery due to hunger and lack of opportunity, or petty drug dealing to earn a higher wage than scavenging for discarded plastic or metal. 85 year old, Remy Fernandez's hands. Remy continues to raise 7 grandchildren after her son was killed. Her daughter-in-law, Lourdes, has just been released from prison, after serving her drug sentence. Lourdes disappeared for three days as Remy searched friends’ homes, the police station and was about to go to the morgue when a grandniece implied that she knew her whereabouts. Drunk, Lourdes left the house unannounced with three of her seven children without her mobile phone or telling anyone in the family where she was going. Remy fears her daughter-in-law may fall back into addiction, becoming a target for an EJK - common once someone is a known drug user or pusher. Year in Pictures: Despite what Trump supporters say, there is a US/Mexico border wall. In fact, here there is a double barrier & an illuminated, militarized no-man’s land between them. Colonia Libertad, Tijuana, Mexico Young boys from the Arias family peer over the first, older US-built border wall at dusk into the flood-lit no-man's land created between the two walls/fences where US Border Patrol is present 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Colonia Libertad, Tijuana, Mexico. The Arias family is led by Estel, these boys’ grandmother and matriarch of the clan. Their house actually rests up against the border wall and yet the family expressed no fear from human or drug traffickers. Still their home, despite being millimeters from the world’s superpower, lacks running water, necessitates an outhouse and they’ve had to illegally tap into the power grid because they cannot afford to pay for electricity. I happened upon their home on a previous reporting trip, one month ago, and was struck by strength of this family living in extreme poverty, through tutelage of the family matriarch. The family not only worries what a new, bigger wall might mean but also they spoke about a plan to build a highway connecting the airport to their east with the main port of entry at San Ysidro, to the west right next to this wall.  #borderwall  #USMexicoborder  #border  #wall  #trumplies  #trump  #humanrights  #tijuana  #sandiego  #immigration  #migration  #documentaryphotography  #jameswhitlowdelano

“Luis”, a deportee from the Mexican State of Querétaro, emerges from his makeshift shelter high atop the first desolate hilltop mesa east of the Pacific Ocean beside US/Mexico border wall. Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. It was necessary to ascend a steep slope, sometimes on all fours, next to a gap in the newer, second border wall/fence, frequented by “coyote” traffickers, to reach the mesa-top where three deportees live. Luis lived for almost 20 years in the United States doing agricultural work in California. Three of his children, born in the United States and US citizens, and his wife still live in United States. Luis occasionally earns US$5/day collecting shopping carts for a supermarket nearby and lives atop this hill because he feels safe. Most plastic waste clogs up a waterway feeding the East Kolkata Wetlands totally obscuring the water below it. India. Wastewater. itself, is 95% water and 5% problematic bacteria. Long canals feeding the wetlands feed the wetlands and much of the bacteria are broken down with UV rays from the sun. UV rays are used industrially to make tap water drinkable. The wetlands are under threat, however, from development, as the city encroaches on the horizon. Parts of the wetlands, which also serve to naturally reduce flooding, are being re-zoned for development. The wetlands are also under threat from garbage and contaminants, like heavy metals, leaching into the water from a huge city dump set within the wetlands. Young man does back flip into the East Kolkata Wetlands, Kolkata's natural sewage system. Wastewater is 95% water and 5% problematic bacteria. The wetlands are also under threat from contamination leaching into the water from a huge city dump set within the wetlands. Most fish will die when phosphate levels approach 15 ppm (parts per million) and 5 ppm will kill fish eggs.  #india  #yamuna  #holyrivers  #pollution  #water  #contamination  #documentaryphotography  #jameswhitlowdelano

Fishermen on a sampan-style boat and Chinese-style net (reflecting its proximity to Southeast Asia) in the highly contaminated Hooghly River, a branch of the Ganges, in Kolkata. According to a WaterAid assessment in 2015, 80% of India's surface water is polluted. WaterAid added that vector-borne disease, dysentery, cholera and diarrhea are on the increase. The sewage and heavy metals in industrial effluent are absorbed into the tissues of fish and enter the human food chain, affecting people's health, in this way. Only 30 % of sewage is treated. The rest is released directly into water bodies.  #india  #howrah  #water  #kolkata  #pollution  #contamination  #fisherman  #documentaryphotography  #jameswhitlowdelano

Cordillera Real, Bolivia A sublime scene but the climate change fact is that the glacier come off Condoriri nearly reached the lake 15 years ago, according to friend & guide Teofilo Mamani. The two glaciers running down the mountains to the right, 15 years ago met and formed a single large glacier. Lago Poopo, Bolivia’s second largest lake, dried out two years ago due to climate change (prolonged drought) & syphoning off of water from rivers that feed it by the mining industry. Bolivia’s glaciers are receding rapidly (some suggest they only have 40 years left) & its rainfall is steadily declining. Farmers, who grow quinoa around the now-dry lake, say that the region is far drier than in the past, driving the young into crowded cities.  #climatechange  #globalwarming  #bolivia  #altiplano  #water  #poopo  #drylake  #ecologicalcollapse  #jameswhitlowdelano

Delhi, India More than 60 million people depend upon the Yamuna River for their water supply. In fact, now the "dead' river section stretches from Panipat, north of Delhi to roughly Agra, downstream. Planting crops along its banks, irrigated with its water, was banned by the supreme court but fruits and vegetables are still grown there. Scientists worry about fruits and vegetables raise with Yamuna water because, among many pollutants, the insecticide Lindane is among them. If the produce is not washed well before cooking it, the chemical can enter the human food chain.  #yamuna  #holyrivers  #water  #agriculture  #irrigation  #pollution  #health  #food  #foodchain  #humanfoodchain  #india  #delhi  #documentaryphotography  #jameswhitlowdelano
