NEXT LEVEL 5% UP/1 DOWN ⠀ To recap, I use a method to increase progress in the gym called the 5% up/1 Down method. Basically, each week increase the weight by 5% and reduce the reps by 1. ⠀ I.e. Cycle 1💪 Week 1: 200 lbs x 8 reps Week 2: 210 lbs x 7 reps Week 3: 220 lbs x 6 reps Cycle 2 💪💪 Week 4: 210 lbs x 8 reps Week 5: 220 lbs x 7 reps Week 6: 230 lbs x 6 reps ⠀ But at a certain point, you won’t be able to lift for the desired reps. If that happens, try dis: ⠀ 👉Drop the weight to the previous cycle’s starting point, drop the reps by 2 and throw in a pause. Continue cycle.👈 ⠀ Fo’ example, let’s say you can only hit 230 for 4 reps in Cycle 2 above. So the following week, use 210 x 6 reps and throw in a pause at the transition point of the movement. For the bench press, that would be when the bar is at your chest. ⠀ Pauses kill momentum and force you to build strength in the weakest point. Like a 🔗, you are only as good as your weakest link. ⠀ The following week increase the weight by 5% and keep the reps and pause the same. The following week, keep the weight and increase the rep by 1. @whey2thin demonstrating some leg extensions using accommodating resistance (bands). Leg extensions have never felt great to me. I typically feel more in the leg closest to the swing arm, I also have never been a big fan of where I feel the tension. But, by adding a band I really like how smooth the motion feels, and where the tension is at its highest. This is a killer for the VMO and has a ton of applications! I have seen lots of people failing to lose weight or improve their physique by following absurd diets with huge calorie deficits whilst simultaneously increasing their activity levels like never before. This approach inevitably leads to a failure, as it is almost impossible to adhere to it. I had the same exact problem! In the picture on the left I weight 95kg whereas on the right 92kg. Every time I reached a reasonable physique I went on massive periods of binging reverting all the progress I had made. Since starting to be consistent not only with training but with my diet, I have made solid progress. It is crucial to develop healthy habits first. Introducing healthy foods to your diet and cutting out all the processed foods should be step number one. The key of reaching your goals is consistency... One step at a time!

So at the moment shame is the aim. I am so unflexable In the thoracic and lumbar middle and lower part of the spine. I do have back issues which is why. So this year the plan is , lots of  #yoga and  #pilates to gain  #strength and  #flexability. I am also tight in my hips which causes back pain so that is a big thing for me also to get on top of. The big 50 in March so this year my plan is. 1. Get flexible. 2. Get fit. 3. Get stronger. 4. Get a calmer mind. 5. Record all progress made for next year. I love to follow  @pilatestv  @ayearofyoga  @cyogalife  @pilatesanytimeus  @anina.all.tangled and many more for inspiration on my journey. 2006 vs. 2018 is the best I could find for this “10 year challenge” going around. Images can only show you so much. Here’s [some of] what this comparison *really* shows: ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 12 years of consistent strength training. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - All vegan, all the time (now in 2019 it’s been 16 years). ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - I weigh 15 pounds more in the second pic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - 2006: zero chin-ups. 2018: 15 in a row, and chin-ups with an additional 40% of my body weight (50 lbs). ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Focusing on strength goals such as the above, with aesthetic changes happening as a byproduct. I mainly wanna lift heavy shit. (But I also wanna *look* like I lift heavy shit.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Many, many set-backs that challenged my ability to maintain a consistent training and nutrition routine. Becoming deathly allergic to some of my favourite foods in the world. Debilitating seasonal allergies. 10 years of allergy shots (just had a horribly adverse reaction to one 2 weeks ago. Had to cancel all my clients that day and be monitored by doctors at the clinic). Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Fracturing a finger. Scoliosis and chronic back pain. Medial epicondylitis. Et cetera. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Going from feeling awkward and insecure in my body to feeling empowered by, proud of, and grateful for it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀ …and so many other things that you’ll never be able to see in an image. 12 happy years with an amazing guy I’m lucky to call my husband (we’d just met when the first pic was taken). 12 happy years with my beloved Ned (the cat, who unfortunately now has cancer). Two university degrees, 2 published books, 2 businesses, 2 trips to Australia, countless trips elsewhere, and an immense amount of learning. Losing two grandparents. Gaining two nieces. Feeling like an absolute beginner and “embracing the suck” in multiple different ventures, including learning a new instrument. Attempting to get better at helping others and adding value to their lives. Confidently deciding to live my life child-free. Buying a house we hadn’t seen in a town we’d never been to. And. So. Much. GET STRONGER by  @jmaxfitness - Getting stronger is easy if you have the patience and drive. - It's a very clear path. - All it involves is trying to do more than last time. - First of all, pick a rep range. Let's say the 4-6 rep range. - Week in and week out, you will lift in the same rep range. Work your way up to 6 reps with the weight. Once you can do 6 reps. Increase the weight by 5lbs and start over. Here's an example if you can bench 185lbs for 4 reps. - Workout 1: 185lbs for 4 reps. - Workout 2: 185lbs for 5 reps. - Workout 3: 185lbs for 6 reps. - Workout 4: 190lbs for 4 reps. - See what we did here? Each workout we did one more rep than last time. Once we got to the top of our rep range, we go back down to the bottom of the range, but we add 5 more lbs. Imagine doing this for 12 months straight. You could add 50lbs to your bench press. - Getting stronger is a slow process, but it's crucial to building muscle. You need to go about it with resiliency. Imagine that if you don't add 50lbs to your lifts by this time next year, you'll be sent to The Wall with the Knight's Watch. That should be motivation enough. - How much can you bench press? When you start to see those muscles peeking through that loose skin 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 . . . . I know adding weights into your exercise routine can be scary, especially in the beginning. I know the fear of bulking up is real because I was worried about that too at one point. But I can’t stress enough the importance of adding weights even “just 2lbs” into your workout routine for several reasons. 1. If like me, you have a larger amount of weight to lose, you will want something to help fill in the loose skin, muscle and fat are really the only two options. Muscles help tighten, fat likes to let it all hang loose. 2. Muscle helps aid in burning fat, so you will actually get visible results quicker (I say visible opposing the scale results bc muscle can be deceiving weight wise) 3. Strength feels soooo good! Of course there are many other health benefits but those are my top 3. I encourage you to not wait until you hit a certain point, begin slowly adding them in your routine. I’m obsessed with my medicine ball! I use it daily (literally) in strength exercises and it is MAGIC. It’s so versatile, making it simple to come up with new exercises to perform. So you never become bored😉 . . . Shoulder presses are one of my favorite ways to incorporate the medicine ball! When I was working towards getting my first push-ups I found this to be a great way to build up to it. I’ve found I’ve become much stronger thanks to performing daily strength training. . . .
