Squatting with Low Back Pain? . . . . Let’s get right to it. . Back pain does not mean complete rest and heating pads. (Unfortunately common advice) . An MRI does NOT tell the whole story and does NOT define you. . Biomechanics DO matter when trying to get back to doing what you enjoy after an injury. —— So let’s take squatting for example. Many of my clients/patients are weightlifters and CrossFit athletes, and after hurting their low back, they want to get back to squatting as soon as possible. —- This is when understanding the biomechanics of squatting can help get you back to lifting pain free as soon as possible. —- The back squat typically requires a more forward trunk position and can increase the demand on the low back muscles (as compared to other squat variations) —- The front squat requires a more upright trunk, decreasing demand on the low back and transferring that motion to the ankles and hips. —- So, if back squats are painful currently... try light front squats to a pain free depth and progress from there. —- Note: back pain is complex and this is simply an example of how assessment and modification of movement will be much more beneficial than bed rest and developing a fear of certain movements. —- ‼️Find this helpful? Back from Iceland. Had a lovely 3 hour sleep last night - what better way to recover than pumping some iron 🤷‍♂️ (probably sleep but that’s not how I roll). . Anywayz here’s what I did - 3 agonist / antagonist super sets and some facepulls to finish (not filmed): . 🔹A1 Inverted Rows 4x12 🔹A2 Band Push Ups 4x12 . 🔹B1 Seated KB Press 3x8 🔹B2 Neutral Grip Pull Ups 3x8 . 🔹C1 Incline Curl 3x8+4 (Rest pause style) 🔹C2 Dual rope push downs 3x12 . This is a really well rounded upper body workout. We have: a horizontal push/pull superset a vertical push/pull superset and some accessory work at the end - bicep, tricep, shoulder prehab. . {ITB rehab - ABDUCTOR STRENGTHENING} 🍑 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ While stretching, foam rolling, cupping, dry needling, hot packs, etc. can help decrease some discomfort in the short term, they’re not going to kick ITB syndrome for good! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ITBS is often the result of overactive TFL & underactive glute medius & minimus (leading to increased hip internal rotation and adduction). Looks like things are back in full swing now 👀... * I decided to make a huge decision and turn my training over to  @jaffestrength as I want to see just how far I can push my strength this year. And my first day on program went way better than I could’ve expected. High volume squats and my knees have a pretty shaky history but I had ZERO pain today with 7 total sets of some relatively light work. Couldn’t be more ecstatic about this and I’m praying to the gods that this can hold up! * Anyways my mediocre lifts were: •Squats- 4x5 with 420lbs •High Bar Squats- 3x8 with 360lbs •RDLs- 3x10 with 405lbs * Everything felt surprisingly easy and light but I have A LOT of work to do getting comfortable squatting again. My pattern is absolutely garbage and I feel like Bambi under the bar now. Muscles: The target muscles are made up of core muscles: transversus abdominis, rectus abdominis, and internal/external obliques. The synergists include the erector spinae (back extensor muscles), glutes, and upper back/shoulder muscles. • Position: In the starting position, you are on your hands in knees (also known as quadruped position). You want to make sure your feet are hip width apart and your knees right under your hips. Your arms are fully extended under your shoulders. It is important to make sure your back is straight. You don’t want it to be arched or rounded. • Movement: Raise one leg and push it straight back through the heel. At the same time, raise your opposite arm fully extending right infront of you. You want your arm and leg parallel to the ground. Hold the position for 5-10 seconds and then switch. During the movement, you want to keep a neutral spine and your hips square to the ground. A tip for keeping a neutral spine is to concentrate tucking your pelvis (into a posterior pelvic tilt) in so you don’t arch your back. • Purpose: The Bird Dog is used a lot for people who have lower back injury. It is used for core stability to teach a person how to correctly use the core muscles and back extensors. • There are regressions and progressions included in the post. Another regression includes an example of one body extremity being extended at a time. Another progression includes doing the movement in a full plank. The options are endless!

. .. 📍Personally, this is my favorite technique for mid back (thoracic spine) mobilization. .. .. ➡️ If you find yourself sitting for long periods of time, your spine will thank you for this one. .. .. 📍📍For the coaches among us, this stretch will prepare athletes to assume better upright posture. .. .. ☝🏻All you need for this stretch is a chair/table/object that is about your upper leg height.  #minuteclinic  #187 _ The next step in learning the Turkish Get Up. _ From the tall seated position, drive your hips up into extension by squeezing your ass muscles. Just like a glute bridge. _ From there, think about a hip hinge. Use that hip hinge to pull your hips back until your knee gets close to your planted hand. _ The knee getting close to the hand is truly a byproduct of pulling your hips back far enough. If you think about pulling from the hip, the knee gets to the desired spot much more easily. It all in the hips. _ Give that some practice. Practice moving in and out of the position without losing stability throughout your shoulder girdle. ✌🏼

⚠️BIG CHEST⚠️ — The chest, or pec muscles, function to flex, adduct, medially rotate the arm. In this video, I am going to show you how to incorporate the forgotten adduction function of the chest into a pushup🧠 — To do this exercise, first put your hand through a handle attached to a cable machine and set up in your normal pushup position. Next, go down as you would for a normal pushup and then when you come back up for the concentric part of the movement, cross the arm that is in the handle to the other side of your free hand. Be sure to squeeze your chest once that hand crosses the other👍🏼 — As you can see by my face (and will soon be able to tell for yourself), this makes a pushup a lot harder. The pump after this exercise is crazy💪🏼 — Give these a shot for 3 sets of 10-12 reps and let me know what you think in the comments🔽 - - -  #chestday

The pallof press has many variations, this one is specific to the golf swing in that it teaches you to maintain proper swing posture. Deadlift Day!!! Week two of the 5/3/1 program has us hitting 70%, 80%, and 90%1RM for 3 reps each. The 90% is actually 3+ as you are welcome to attempt more reps if possible. This is 5 reps at 285lbs for my 90%. The first 4 felt solid but I could feel like I lost some core tension on rep 5. As a result, I had to call it at 5. Can you spot the result of this lost tension in my form? Lifting heavier, this short while, has reminded me that I need to really check in with my technique more often. Moving forward, I want to have a visualized set prior to each resisted set to get my mind right. I'll let you know how that goes. Reactive speed work from today W/  @texasbaseball Commits,  @jrodsouth10 and  @daltonporterr - The drill Jared and Dalton are performing above is one of my favorite drills to use with athletes of all ages to improve agility/game speed as it simulates the athlete in a chaotic (unpredictable) environment - similar to what they’re faced with on the field playing their sport - You’ll notice in the video above the athletes are reacting to visual cues (each other), vocal cues (coach - me), and they're competing against each other - Here’s How to Play 🏃‍♂️ First, both athletes will start facing each other - from here the athlete who is designated the "leader" will initiate the drill by performing a side shuffle or sprint to the right or left. The athlete who is the "follower" in the drill is to mirror the leader the entire time until he here's my voice (when I say "GO"). When both athletes hear my voice (which can be at any time throughout the drill) they will get out into their sprint and try to beat the other athlete to the finish line - I really think this drill can be a great way for you guys to improve your agility/game speed this offseason! Give it a try with your friend and let me know what you think!
